870 will present an ensemble of three works: a new wall drawing, the 2007 film screen painting Brutopia and the 24/7 Shield from 2015.
The wall work is dedicated to the early political writings of Simone Weil. Weil was a singular 20th century figure: a political activist, philosopher and spiritual thinker. Weil’s early political writings cut across the standard categories of Marxism, and have a blunt poetic force and truth that is still resonant.
Burchill/ McCamley have been working individually and collaboratively since the mid 1980’s. Their work often uses citation, and traverses a wide range of references, from modernism to film, literature to feminism. It also frequently plays across the boundaries of art and design, sculpture and furniture.

These exhibitions are part of TCB’s Prolegomenon series supported by the City of Melbourne’s Arts Grants Program, Creative Victoria and Hells Kitchen, which encourages intergenerational exchange between emerging and established artist.
