Exhibition: 5 April – April 22, 2017
Jane’s salvation and Paterson’s curse are both colloquial names for Echium plantagineum, an invasive species introduced to Australia in the 1800’s. It’s said that the seeds were introduced by Jane Paterson in an attempt to beautify her garden near Albury, NSW. The weed has now infested much of the countryside throughout southeastern Australia. It can be recognised by its vividly coloured flowers appearing as a carpet of purple across the paddocks.
I acknowledge that this work was made, and is being exhibited, on the lands of the Wurundgeri people of the Kulin Nations. I also acknowledge the Wiradjuri people as traditional owners of the land on which I was raised and upon which my family still lives.
Thea Jones is an artist based in Melbourne. She graduated from Monash University in 2013. Recent projects include All her thoughts are so tactile, 2016, Heritage Hill Dandenong. Thea will have a solo exhibition at Bus Projects in August 2017. She is also a current board member at Seventh.
These exhibitions are part of TCB’s Prolegomenon series supported by the City of Melbourne’s Arts Grants Program, Creative Victoria and Hells Kitchen, which encourages intergenerational exchange between emerging and established artist.
