Doing Becoming Being

30.05.2012 – 16.06.2012

Tully Arnot | Charles Dennington | Ariel Schlesinger | Christine Sun Kim | Virginia Overell

Curated by Tully Arnot and Charles Dennington

Doing Becoming Being develops on ‘outsider’ modes of invention; a non-teleological process where outcomes are unanticipated, in a manic, tinkering approach to the creation of tools, objects and proto-scientific theories.

Within this practice, the exhibition addresses both inventive and alchemical explorations of material and form. An alchemical philosophy is used to explore the subtleties of sculptural techniques in the changing of states ~ an everyday object to something else, or stuck between.

Through an experimental understanding of invention, a post-rationalised (and often irrational) attribution of function to existing objects, structures and relationships, is used in an attempt to radically reinvent ways of thinking and engaging with space and form.

Doing Becoming Being proposes the invention as a solution which comes into existence intuitively. An invention or tool that enhances an aspect of life or describes a tangential solution which is only part function and through its tone unique to art.
